Sikkim Observes National Unity Day With Mass Cleanliness Drive in Namchi

Gangtok, Nov 12: As part of National Unity Day celebrations, a mass cleanliness drive was held in and around Namchi town on Wednesday. The initiative was organized by the District Administration Namchi in association with My Bharat Kendra Namchi.

The event saw participation from a wide range of dignitaries, officials, and community members, including Area MLA Satish Chandra Rai, Advisor (Panchayati Raj) Rama Tamang, Chairperson of Namchi Municipal Council Ganesh Rai, Chairperson of Sikkim Youth Skill Development Board Basant Yonzon, DC Namchi Anupa Tamling, ADCs Subash Ghimirey and Trisang Tamang, SDMs Nim Pintso Bhutia and Wangdi Sherpa, along with officers and staff from various departments.

Members of local associations, including the All Sikkim Government Drivers’ Association, Namchi District Football Association, Namchi Local Taxi Drivers’ Association, NGOs, and residents also joined the drive.

MLA Satish Chandra Rai praised the initiative and encouraged citizens to adopt cleanliness as a daily habit to make Namchi a model town. Participants were divided into teams and assigned specific locations for cleaning, focusing on removing plastic and other waste while promoting awareness about environmental hygiene. The Namchi Municipal Council ensured proper disposal of all collected waste.

The cleanliness drive was part of activities planned by the District Core Committee during a meeting on 5 November. The committee was formed to oversee preparations for District-Level Padhyatras marking the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
