Agartala, November 14, 2025: Tripura Police has initiated a strict enforcement drive across the state to curb underage driving, citing rising concerns over road safety and motor vehicle accidents involving juveniles.

According to a press release issued by the Office of the Director General of Police on Friday, the crackdown is being carried out under Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, which prohibits individuals below 18 years from operating motorized vehicles. The police have warned that violations pose serious risks to public safety and will be dealt with firmly.

The amended Motor Vehicles Act prescribes stringent penalties for guardians and vehicle owners who allow minors to drive. These include: A fine of ₹25,000 for the vehicle owner or guardian; Imprisonment of up to three years for the responsible adult; Cancellation of the vehicle’s registration for one year; A ban on juvenile offenders from obtaining a driving licence until the age of 25.

The Tripura Police has urged all parents and guardians to ensure that minors do not operate any motor vehicle under any circumstances.

The enforcement drive is expected to be intensified in the coming weeks as authorities aim to reduce road accidents and promote safer driving practices in the state.
