Guwahati, Nov 15: In a rare wildlife discovery, the Assam State Zoo has recorded the state’s first case of albinism in the Checkered Keelback (Fowlea piscator), marking a significant addition to Assam’s herpetological research.

The juvenile male snake, measuring 290 mm, was found near the Assam State Zoo on June 1, 2024. Albinism, caused by a lack of melanin pigment, gives the reptile a pale coloration and reddish eyes—features rarely seen in wild snakes.

Zoo experts confirmed the species through detailed examination of its physical characteristics and scalation. After thorough documentation and observation, the snake was safely released into a protected forest area within three days of its discovery.

The finding has been published in the international open-access journal Reptiles & Amphibians, which focuses on herpetological research and conservation studies.

This discovery enhances scientific understanding of rare genetic traits in Indian wildlife and highlights Assam’s growing role as a centre for biodiversity research and conservation. The Assam State Zoo’s handling of the incident reflects its commitment to both animal welfare and scientific advancement.
