Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of attempting to include voters from outside Assam in the state’s electoral rolls ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.

Addressing a party event in Dhubri, Gogoi claimed that the chief minister was trying to enlist people from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. “Assamese people do not like Himanta Biswa Sarma. He has become the biggest liability for the BJP, and that is why he is trying to add names of people from other states to safeguard his chair,” he said.

The Election Commission has launched a special summary revision of electoral rolls with January 1, 2026, as the qualifying date to ensure updated and accurate voter lists.

Gogoi urged political parties, media, and civil society organisations to stay vigilant to prevent outsiders from voting. “We will contest not just to increase our numbers in the assembly but to come to power to protect the interests of the people of Assam,” he added.

He further alleged that Sarma was in “deep trouble” and seeking support from AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, and suggested that Asaduddin Owaisi may also visit Assam soon.

Gogoi highlighted that eight opposition parties, including Congress, CPI(M), Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad, CPI, CPI(ML), Jatiya Dal-Asom (JDA), and the All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC) from Karbi Anglong, have formed an alliance to take on the BJP in the upcoming elections.
