Agartala, November 21, 2025: In a significant push toward reducing plastic waste, Bhavan’s Tripura Vidyamandir (BTVM) has launched ‘Jadui Neer’—edible water balls designed as an eco-friendly substitute for single-use plastic bottles. The innovation drew special attention as it was developed by Class IX student Nabamita Paul under the mentorship of Chemistry teacher Mukta Roy.

Created through the spherification process, these lightweight, biodegradable water spheres offer quick hydration and are particularly useful during sports events, where plastic consumption typically rises. Students were also given a live demonstration, illustrating how simple chemistry concepts can lead to practical, sustainable solutions.

Speaking to Northeast Today, Chemistry teacher Mukta Roy said the idea stemmed from the challenge of keeping students hydrated during sports without generating plastic waste. “This was my idea. Instead of plastic bottles, athletes can use edible water balls. They support sustainable development and provide instant hydration. The balls can be preserved for at least 24 hours, sometimes longer,” she said.

Roy added that similar products are already being produced by a Bengaluru-based institute, proving the viability of the concept. She credited Principal Swapna Shome for her encouragement and support throughout the project.

Under Roy’s guidance, young innovator Nabamita Paul successfully prepared the edible water balls—an accomplishment that has brought pride to the school’s science department. The initiative is expected to motivate more students to pursue environmentally conscious experiments and innovations.

With the introduction of ‘Jadui Neer’, BTVM has emerged as one of the first schools in Tripura to practically implement a sustainable hydration alternative, blending scientific learning with environmental responsibility.
