Itanagar, Nov 25: The Indian Army rescued eight elderly tourists in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang district after their vehicle got stuck due to heavy snowfall, officials said on Tuesday.
The sudden onset of winter brought the season’s first snowfall to Tawang, West Kameng, Shi-Yomi, and parts of Upper Subansiri districts on Monday. Several road stretches became slippery overnight as temperatures dropped sharply, leaving many travellers stranded.
The tourists, all above 60 years old, were en route to Bomdila in West Kameng district when their vehicle became immobile on the snow-covered Old Sela route, a region known for unpredictable weather.
Responding to their distress call, personnel from the Army’s Gajraj Corps conducted a rescue operation amid ongoing snowfall. The team provided medical aid, helped the tourists warm up, and ensured their safe evacuation from the snowbound area.
All eight individuals were later escorted to safety and resumed their journey to Bomdila. Authorities have advised visitors to monitor weather forecasts and exercise caution while travelling through mountain passes, as more snowfall is expected in the coming days.
