Agartala, November 26, 2025: Political unrest in Dharmanagar spiraled into violent clashes on Wednesday following an alleged attempt by miscreants to set fire to the district Congress office late Tuesday night.
In protest, Congress workers staged a road blockade outside the party office on Central Road early in the morning. The blockade was lifted after some time, and party members gathered inside the office to discuss Constitution Day. However, the situation quickly took a volatile turn.
Soon after, BJP supporters launched a protest march that culminated in another blockade outside the Congress office. At the same time, CPI(M) members, returning from a Constitution Day program at the SDM office, were caught in the confrontation.
According to allegations, nearly 200–250 BJP workers attacked the CPI(M) members, vandalizing microphones, musical instruments, vehicles, and party materials. Four CPI(M) workers sustained serious injuries, including former MLA Amitabh Dutta and Dharmanagar secretary Abhijit Dey.
Police officials, including the Additional SP of North District, were present at the scene. However, eyewitnesses claim the attack occurred in front of them. Journalists seeking a response reported that the officer left the spot without comment.
The violence escalated further when BJP workers allegedly stormed the Congress office, damaging furniture and assaulting party members. Several Congress workers were injured and are currently undergoing treatment at the district hospital.
With repeated blockades, assaults, and political clashes, Dharmanagar has been thrown into turmoil. Questions are now being raised over the administration’s role in controlling the situation and ensuring public safety.
