Guwahati, Nov 29: Legislators from the Congress and CPI(M) staged a walkout in the Assam Assembly on Saturday after Speaker Biswajit Daimary disallowed a discussion on the situation at Tezpur University.
Speaker Daimary stated that issues related to a central university fall outside the Assembly’s purview and cannot be debated directly. Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia (Congress) raised concerns over whether the Zero Hour notice submitted by his party for the discussion had been accepted.
Saikia highlighted the ongoing disruption of classes at the university following tensions after the death of singer Zubeen Garg in mid-September. He also alleged that the vice-chancellor of Tezpur University was “absconding” after criticism from students and others over perceived disrespect towards the late singer.
The Speaker suggested that such concerns could be raised during discussions on Education Department bills scheduled later in the session. Dissatisfied with this response, Congress and CPI(M) MLAs walked out of the House in protest.
