Agartala, December 2, 2025: The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has ordered a formal inquiry into allegations of prolonged ragging and physical abuse at the boys’ hostel of Anandanagar Dr B.R. Ambedkar English Medium School, after a sharp fall in the number of residents over the past two years.
According to the Commission, which is headed by Justice Arindam Lodh, the strength of the hostel has dropped from around 100 boarders to just 22. The decline has been linked to complaints of “continuous ragging over the past year”, prompting several parents to withdraw their children from the facility.
A recent complaint involved a Class VII student who was taken out of the hostel by his family after he reported physical harassment. The student and his mother have reportedly accused the Hostel Superintendent, Rajesh Debbarma, in connection with the incidents.
The complaint further alleges that senior students from Classes XI and XII demanded money from juniors, including Rs 600 from the Class VII student, and assaulted him when he refused to pay. A similar incident had allegedly been reported about six months ago.
In the latest episode, the student is said to have contacted his guardian using a security guard’s phone, claiming that he was being denied food and subjected to physical assault. His mother rushed to the school following the call.
Superintendent Rajesh Debbarma has denied the allegations, stating that the matter arose out of a dispute involving a Class XII student and has already been resolved.
The THRC has directed the Director of School Education to conduct a detailed investigation and submit a report within one month. The case is scheduled to be taken up for further hearing on January 8, 2026.
