Sikkim Celebrates International Day Of Persons With Disabilities

Gangtok, Dec 3: Sikkim celebrated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities at MG Marg, Gangtok, on Wednesday, organised by the Women, Child, Senior Citizen and Divyangjan Welfare Department. The event was held under the theme, ‘Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress.’

The programme was inaugurated by Minister of Printing and Stationery, Social Welfare, and Women, Child, Senior Citizen and Divyangjan Welfare Department, Samdup Lepcha, as the Chief Guest. MLA cum Advisor Pamin Lepcha attended as the Guest of Honour.

Addressing the gathering, Samdup Lepcha urged the public to view persons with disabilities as equal citizens, emphasising their abilities and potential. He highlighted the performance of a hearing-impaired dancer, noting that disability does not limit talent. He also praised teachers and trainers for their dedication and acknowledged the Chief Minister’s contributions to health and education in the state.

Director of ICDS, WCSC, and DWD, Urvashi Poudyal, stressed that persons with disabilities should be recognised for their rights, aspirations, and capabilities rather than as recipients of charity. Dr Rajesh Saini, CEO of Siliguri Greater Lions Eye Hospital and President, Vision 2020 India, spoke on disability inclusion and eye health and lauded the state government for establishing a dedicated department for persons with disabilities.

The programme began with a pipe band performance by students of Paljor Namgyal Girls School, followed by cultural performances from children with disabilities, students from special schools, and participants from PDCS.

During the event, the government announced a one-time grant of Rs 2 lakh to support the marriage of disabled couples and provided grants to Halfway Home, Deorali Mayalmu Sangh, and Assam Lingzey. Caregivers were felicitated with cash awards, while medallists of the Second Para Sports Meet held in Guwahati from November 27 to 29 received Rs 50,000 each along with mementos.

The event was also attended by Mayor Nell Bahadur Chettri, Deputy Mayor Tshering Palden Bhutia, Chairpersons of various commissions, advisors, district officials, and departmental staff. The vote of thanks was proposed by Assistant Commissioner Prem Narayan Pradhan.
