A coalition of five proscribed insurgent organisations in Manipur has issued a strict ultimatum to all individuals and organisations that participated in the recently concluded Sangai Festival, demanding a public apology by December 10.
The groups labelled participation in the state’s premier cultural event as a “betrayal” of the thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) who continue to live in relief camps. The Sangai Festival was held from November 21 to 30, even as IDPs staged protests urging authorities to ensure their safe return. Since ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities broke out in May 2023, at least 260 people have been killed and thousands remain displaced.
In a joint statement, the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), Kanglei Yawol Kanba Lup (KYKL), People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), PREPAK (Progressive), and the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) accused the government of failing to take meaningful steps toward resolving the crisis or rehabilitating displaced families.
The outfits declared that all artists, business establishments, professionals, and stall owners who took part in the festival must issue a public apology before December 10. They also announced a one-year ban on four major drama troupes that performed at the event, accusing them of acting against “the wishes of the people.”
The ultimatum has further heightened tensions in a state already struggling with prolonged instability, deep mistrust, and the unresolved hardship faced by thousands of displaced residents.
