The visit of Singjamei Assembly Constituency MLA Yumnam Khemchand to the Litan Sareikhong Relief Camp in Ukhrul district triggered objections from camp authorities and local organisations, who stated that the visit was not coordinated with them in advance.
According to Camp In-charge Lunkhojang Baite, the MLA arrived at around 9.30 am along with a group of BJP workers at a time when many internally displaced persons (IDPs) had gone out for daily work, leaving mostly women, children and elderly persons in the camp. The visit, he said, was neither scheduled nor officially communicated and was brief, during which photographs were taken.
Camp representatives later expressed concern over certain media reports, stating that some coverage appeared to conflate the MLA’s visit with an unrelated interview conducted by a journalist, creating the impression of wider interaction with camp residents. The camp authorities urged the media to maintain accuracy and caution in their reporting.
The Kuki Inpi Ukhrul District (KIU) also voiced strong reservations, describing the visit as a breach of protocol and stating that the presence of a security detail caused unease among IDPs who remain in a vulnerable situation. The organisation said that neither district-level Kuki bodies nor local youth organisations were informed prior to the visit.
KIU further clarified that while movement of Meitei individuals through the district has been permitted in the interest of peaceful coexistence, it does not extend to political visits without prior consultation.
Both the KIU and camp authorities called upon political leaders and media persons to act with greater sensitivity, transparency and responsibility when dealing with matters involving displaced families.
