Garima Garg, wife of late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, on Friday welcomed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) chargesheet filed in connection with the singer’s murder and urged the judiciary to ensure speedy justice.
The chargesheet, submitted before a local court, names six accused. These include singer’s secretary Siddhartha Sharma, festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, and band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta, who have been charged with murder. Two personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya, have been charged with criminal conspiracy and breach of trust for allegedly misappropriating funds.
Speaking to reporters, Garima Garg said the investigation was initiated following an FIR filed by the family and progressed as expected. She expressed gratitude to the investigating agency, stating that the findings were in line with public expectations and that the matter now rests with the judicial process.
She said the family has full faith in the judiciary and wants those found guilty to be punished without delay. Garima also referred to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s indication that the state government may request the Chief Justice to assign the case to a fast-track court.
Zubeen Garg died under mysterious circumstances while swimming in Singapore on September 19 during the North East India Festival, which was organised by Shyamkanu Mahanta. Garima reiterated confidence in the SIT probe and the Indian judicial system, and said there was no need for any external investigation.
