Cachar district police conducted two separate operations on Sunday, seizing heroin and a large consignment of foreign-made cigarettes along the Assam–Meghalaya border and within the district, and arrested three persons, according to Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das.

In the first operation, acting on specific intelligence, a police team intercepted a vehicle at the Digorkhal check post on the Assam–Meghalaya border. During a search, officers recovered 81 packets containing 16,200 Burmese cigarettes. One person, identified as Debnath D Sangma from Goalpara district, was arrested. Police said further investigation is underway.

In a separate operation within Cachar district, police carried out a raid on Jirighat Bagan Road following inputs about trafficking of NDPS substances. Two local residents—Alimuddin Sekh (36) and Akal Ali (55) of Jirighat TE (Sekh Basti) under Jirighat police station—were arrested. The search led to the recovery of a soap case and 14 vials containing 57.97 grams of heroin, including containers. The substance tested positive using an on-site NDPS testing kit.

Police also seized a scooty bearing registration number AS-11-AE-6824 and three mobile phones from the accused. Legal proceedings under the NDPS Act have been initiated.

The seizures come days after a major operation on December 13, when Cachar police recovered 3.19 lakh pieces of foreign-made cigarettes, valued at approximately Rs 30 lakh.
