Assam’s Veteran Journalist Prafulla Govinda Baruah Passes Away At 94

Guwahati, Dec 15: Prafulla Govinda Baruah, veteran journalist and editor of The Assam Tribune, passed away late Sunday night at a hospital in Guwahati following age-related ailments. He was 94.

A Padma Shri awardee, Baruah was closely associated with The Assam Tribune, Northeast India’s oldest English daily, founded in 1939 by his father Radha Gobinda Baruah. He served the institution for several decades and was Chairman Emeritus of the Assam Tribune Group at the time of his death.

Born in Dibrugarh in 1932, Baruah had been undergoing treatment for several days and died around 9:30 pm. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed condolences in a post on X, referring to Baruah as a prominent figure in Assam’s journalistic sphere and noting his contributions to journalism, literature, education, and public life.

The family said the last rites will be held on Monday in Guwahati.
