Agartala, December 17, 2025: Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman emphasized that the true purpose of education extends beyond earning degrees to actively contributing to the development of the nation and the state.
Speaking at the freshers’ welcome ceremony organized by Dasharath Deb Memorial College at the New Town Hall in Khowai on Tuesday, the minister highlighted the pivotal role of students and youth in building a “Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat” and a “Ek Tripura Shrestha Tripura.”
“Colleges are not merely centers of academic instruction; they are hubs of social awakening and platforms for nurturing future leadership,” said Minister Barman. He noted that educational institutions play a vital role in expanding students’ knowledge, fostering critical thinking and self-confidence, and sowing the seeds of leadership.
The minister outlined the state government’s efforts to make education accessible from rural to urban areas. “Before 2018, Tripura had 22 degree colleges. Today, that number has increased to 28, with new institutions being developed in Ambassa and Karbook,” he stated. He also mentioned that the state now hosts 11 universities and national institutions, both public and private, and has implemented the National Education Policy (NEP). Special scholarships have also been introduced for differently-abled students.
The event began with floral tributes to Goddess Saraswati and Bharat Mata by the minister and other dignitaries. MLA Pinaki Das Chowdhury urged students to dedicate themselves to nation-building, while Khowai Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati Aparna Singh Roy (Dutta) encouraged youth to contribute to a self-reliant and developed India.
Apart from them, Khowai Municipal Council Chairperson Debasish Nath Sharma, Zilla Parishad member Anukul Das, Dasharath Deb College Teacher Council Secretary Dr. Baburam Swami, and social workers Binoy Debbarma, Samir Kumar Das, Animesh Nag, Arjanu Tripura, and Abhijit Sutradhar. The welcome address was delivered by student representative Rahul Biswas, and the event was presided over by college principal Dr. Khokan Majumder.
