Angry locals on Wednesday blocked roads at the Checkon area in Imphal, a day after suspected Kuki militants allegedly attacked civilian residential areas at Torbung in Bishnupur district, triggering fresh tensions in the region.

According to officials, the situation at Torbung, located along the Bishnupur–Churachandpur district border, turned tense on Tuesday at around 8.30 pm following an exchange of fire between security forces and unknown armed miscreants.

Local residents from Phougakchao Ikhai and Torbung stated that around 389 internally displaced persons (IDPs) belonging to 67 families had recently been resettled at Torbung following government instructions.

Officials said that the attack was allegedly launched by unknown armed miscreants from the Churachandpur side, prompting an immediate retaliation by security forces. The miscreants reportedly used bombs during the attack, which lasted for nearly 20 minutes. The fresh gunfight triggered panic among villagers in the area.

Reinforcement teams from the state police and central security forces were rushed to the area to bring the situation under control. However, officials said that the situation in Torbung remains tense.

Meanwhile, according to a police statement, the Director General of Police (DGP), Manipur, visited Churachandpur district on Tuesday. During the visit, the DGP inaugurated the conference room at the Office of the Superintendent of Police, Churachandpur, and later chaired a comprehensive security review meeting with officers of the Manipur Police and other security forces deployed in the district to assess the prevailing security situation and review operational preparedness.
