Guwahati, Dec 19: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the death of singer Zubeen Garg has filed a complaint with the Assam Police Crime Branch against Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi. The complaint alleges that Gogoi circulated “unverified” documents on social media, claiming they were part of the official charge sheet.

A senior official described the circulation of the documents as “illegal,” cautioning that it could mislead the public and create confusion. Gogoi, the Sivasagar MLA, had shared documents purportedly linked to the charge sheet against seven individuals accused in Garg’s death.

The nine-member SIT, led by Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta, submitted the charge sheet to the Kamrup (Metro) Chief Judicial Magistrate on December 12. Certified copies of the charge sheet have not been released by the court and are currently accessible only to the accused and their families, a lawyer noted.

SIT Investigating Officer Rosie Kalita filed the complaint requesting an FIR against Gogoi. An official said, “The matter is under examination, and a decision will follow.”

Gogoi responded on social media, stating, “I have come to know that the government has filed a case against me for making the charge sheet public. I am severely ill, but I will go to Guwahati to face the case.”

Charges Against the Accused

The SIT has filed charges against the following individuals:

Siddhartha Sharma (Garg’s secretary): Murder, criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust.

Shyamkanu Mahanta (festival organizer): Murder, criminal conspiracy, extortion, cheating, destruction of evidence. (Mahanta died mysteriously while swimming in Singapore on September 19 during the North East India Festival Garg attended.)

Shekhar Jyoti Goswami (band member): Murder, criminal breach of trust.

Amritprava Mahanta (band member): Murder, destruction of evidence.

Sandipan Garg (Garg’s cousin, suspended police officer): Culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya (personal security officers): Criminal conspiracy, breach of trust for misappropriating funds.

All seven accused are in custody, with five held at Baksa prison and Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta at Haflong jail.
