Manipur Police on Friday arrested an active cadre linked to the banned Revolutionary People’s Front/People’s Liberation Army (RPF/PLA) on charges of extortion, officials said.
The arrested individual has been identified as Thangjam Surankumar Singh (29), also known by the aliases Rajesh, Achou and Luwangcha. He is a resident of Pourabi Awang Leikai in Imphal East district.
Police apprehended him from Meitei Lamkhai Crossing under the jurisdiction of Singjamei Police Station.
During the arrest, security personnel recovered a mobile phone with a SIM card, a wallet containing an Aadhaar card, and Rs 300 in cash from his possession. Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain his exact role in extortion activities and to identify possible links with other operatives of the proscribed outfit.
Meanwhile, security forces have intensified search operations and area domination exercises in fringe and vulnerable areas across multiple districts of Manipur to prevent any untoward incidents.
As part of heightened security measures, a total of 114 nakas and checkpoints have been established across both hill and valley districts of the state. No additional arrests or detentions were reported during these operations.
Authorities also ensured the safe movement of 69 vehicles carrying essential commodities along National Highway-37. Strict security arrangements, including armed escorts along sensitive stretches, have been put in place to facilitate the uninterrupted and secure transportation of essential supplies.
