Agartala, December 20, 2025: In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at GBP Hospital successfully performed a complex open-heart surgery that saved the life of a 22-year-old woman from South Tripura district.

Levita Tripura, a resident of Manu area in Sabrum subdivision, was admitted to the hospital on September 5 after suffering a brain stroke that left her paralyzed on the right side of her body. Initially treated in the Female Medicine and Neurology wards, she later developed severe chest pain and breathing difficulties. On December 9, she was referred to the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) & Interventional Radiology (IR) Department.

Under the supervision of renowned CTVS surgeon Dr. Kanak Narayan Bhattacharya, diagnostic tests revealed a dangerous embolized tumor in her left atrial myxoma, measuring 33 mm x 19 mm. Given the urgency, Dr. Bhattacharya scheduled surgery for December 19.

On that day, a team of specialists led by Dr. Bhattacharya successfully removed the tumor through open-heart surgery — marking only the second such successful procedure at GBP Hospital, the first being in March 2023.

The operation was conducted entirely free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (ABPMJAY) scheme. In a private hospital, such a procedure would have cost nearly ₹5 lakh.

Currently, Levita is recovering in the ICU and responding well to treatment.

The surgery was led by CTVS Surgeon Dr. Kanak Narayan Bhattacharya, with support from Cardiac Anesthesiologist Dr. Rimjhim Chakma. Critical care was managed by Dr. Surjit Pal and Dr. Manimoy Debbarma, while Cathlab Technicians Sanjay Ghosh and Arijit Pal assisted alongside Cathlab Nurses Prankrishna Deb and Debabrata Debnath. The team also included Physician Assistant Sudipta Mondal and OT Assistants Ratan Mondal, Joydeep Chakraborty, and Abhijit Raj. Perfusion support was provided by Sujan Sahu and Saurabh Tripura, with OT Nurses Mousumi Debnath, Annabahadur Jamatiya, Saurabh Shil, and Arpita Sarkar ensuring smooth operation procedures. Coordinating the ICU were Abhishek Dutt, Richashree Sarkar, and Jamson Debbarma, whose combined efforts contributed to the success of this complex open-heart surgery.

The patient’s family expressed heartfelt gratitude to the state government and the hospital staff for their dedication and support.
