The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has constituted a dedicated textbook development team to design syllabi and textbooks on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Classes 11 and 12, the Ministry of Education informed the Lok Sabha.

The move is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023. As part of early integration, NCERT has already included a project on Animation and Games, using AI tools, in the vocational education textbook for Class 6.

The Ministry said AI and Computational Thinking (AI & CT) are being positioned as key components of school education. An AI curriculum is planned to be introduced across all schools from Class 3 onwards beginning the 2026–27 academic session.

In parallel, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has prepared a draft AI and computational thinking curriculum for Classes 3 to 12. The framework proposes introducing basic AI concepts in the early grades, with advanced computational thinking and AI to be made compulsory subjects for Classes 9 and 10.

The government has also launched SOAR (Skilling for AI Readiness), a national programme aligned with NEP 2020, the National Programme on AI (NPAI) Skilling Framework, and the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. The initiative targets students and educators from Classes 6 to 12, with a focus on improving AI literacy and reducing the digital divide.

Under SOAR, students will have access to three 15-hour micro-credentials—AI to be Aware, AI to Acquire, and AI to Aspire—amounting to 45 hours of learning mapped to the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF).
