Guwahati, Dec 22: Assam has been placed on “high alert” following escalating unrest in neighbouring Bangladesh, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday. State authorities are closely monitoring developments along the international border.

Addressing reporters, Sarma cited reports of atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh, including cases of people being “burnt alive.” He also highlighted concerns about discussions in Bangladesh regarding the potential inclusion of parts of northeast India into its territory, along with the presence of Bangladeshi migrants in Assam.

“We have to be vigilant and must keep a sharp eye on developments in that country,” Sarma said, reiterating warnings about “Bangladeshi elements” allegedly seeking a merger of northeast India with Bangladesh.

The unrest in Bangladesh was triggered by the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, a key figure in protests that led to the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina government.

Prohibitory measures remain in Assam’s Cachar district along the Bangladesh border to prevent illegal crossings and maintain law and order, officials confirmed.
