Agartala, December 25, 2025: Opposition leader and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury on Wednesday accused the Tripura government of failing to maintain law and order, alleging that leaders of opposition parties were increasingly facing attacks across the state.

Addressing a party programme at Ramnagar, Chaudhury’s remarks came days after Chief Minister Manik Saha claimed that crime in Tripura had been significantly contained in 2025, up to November, compared to 2023.

Chaudhury cited the alleged attack on former MLA Amitabh Datta at Dharmanagar about a month ago, claiming it occurred in the presence of police personnel. “Even after a formal complaint was lodged mentioning the names of the attackers, no arrests have been made so far, which reflects the deteriorating law and order situation,” he alleged.

He also referred to what he described as police inaction in connection with an attack on former MLA Ratan Das, who currently serves as the secretary of the CPI(M) Sadar district committee.

Raising concerns over restrictions on political programmes, Chaudhury said the party had sought permission to hold a rally in the Ramnagar area after Durga Puja, but police authorities repeatedly denied approval. “After prolonged persuasion, permission was finally granted. The Chief Minister often says every political party has the right to organise programmes, but this principle seems to vanish when the opposition applies,” he remarked.

Taking a dig at the ongoing rift between the BJP and its allies Tipra Motha and IPFT, Chaudhury said such differences were inevitable as the alliance was formed on what he termed “false assurances.”

Accusing the BJP of failing to fulfil its commitments, he recalled that the party had promised 50,000 jobs within the first year if voted to power ahead of the 2018 Assembly elections. “People are aware of how many jobs have actually been provided over the last seven-and-a-half years,” he said, adding that assurances to regularise contingent, fixed-pay and DRW employees also remain unimplemented.

Following the rally, tension prevailed briefly when a group of youths allegedly attempted to attack CPI(M) supporters while raising slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’. However, security forces intervened promptly and prevented any untoward incident.
