Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday assured strict action against those involved in the vandalism of a Christian school in Nalbari district ahead of Christmas, stating that the state government remains committed to maintaining peace and communal harmony.
Assam Police arrested four individuals in connection with the incident that took place on Wednesday at St. Mary’s English School in Panigaon area under Belsor police station. According to the police, the accused entered the school premises and damaged Christmas decorations, street lights, plant pots and other items. Some objects were also set on fire.
A case has been registered at Belsor police station, and further investigation is underway. Police said the act was aimed at disrupting Christmas celebrations and added that law and order would be strictly enforced.
The Chief Minister, in a post on X, said Assam Police acted promptly and reiterated the government’s resolve to ensure the safety of all institutions and citizens.
The incident drew political reactions, with Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi condemning the vandalism and calling for unity to counter divisive acts.
Christmas was celebrated across the country on Thursday with prayers, carols, illuminations and festive gatherings.
