Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday said he is confident that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will form the next government in Assam after the 2026 Assembly elections. Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Sonowal pointed to what he described as strong enthusiasm among party workers and said the alliance expects active public participation in the electoral process.
Sonowal stated that if the NDA returns to power, the government will continue its focus on governance. His remarks were made while responding to questions from the media on the political situation in the state ahead of the polls.
In a related development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma chaired a meeting at Lok Sewa Bhawan with representatives of the Karbi community, members of civil society, and officials of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC). The meeting discussed several issues, including a recent police firing incident in Kheroni area of West Karbi Anglong, in which one person died.
Following the meeting, Sarma announced that the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council would provide employment to one next of kin of the deceased, while the Assam government would extend an ex-gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh.
Separately, the Election Commission of India has ordered a special revision of electoral rolls in Assam under Section 21 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. January 1, 2026, has been set as the qualifying date for the revision. The Commission said the exercise differs from similar revisions in other states, taking into account Assam’s specific citizenship-related framework and the ongoing Supreme Court-monitored National Register of Citizens process.
