Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday inaugurated the Rs 227 crore redeveloped Batadrava Than, the birthplace of Vaishnavite saint Srimanta Sankardeva, in Assam’s Nagaon district.
The event was attended by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Pabitra Margherita, and state cultural minister Bimal Bora. Shah was accorded a traditional Sattriya welcome by gayan-bayan performers and visited the main central structure of the complex, which houses the Guru Asana, the revered seat of Srimanta Sankardeva.
The redevelopment project, first proposed in the 2021–22 Assam budget, is officially known as the Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva Abhirbhav Kshetra. The initiative aims to develop the historic site into a major cultural and tourism destination, highlighting the life, philosophy, artistic contributions of Srimanta Sankardeva, and the wider cultural traditions of Assam.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Abhirbhav Kshetra has been developed to honour the legacy of Srimanta Sankardeva and reflects the state government’s efforts to preserve and promote Assam’s satras, namghars, and cultural heritage.
