Guwahati, Dec 30: Opposition parties in Assam have alleged that a “political conspiracy” was responsible for the recent violence between Karbi and Bihari communities in West Karbi Anglong, accusing the state administration of failing to maintain law and order.
A joint delegation comprising leaders from the Congress, CPI(M), Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad and CPI(ML) Liberation visited violence-affected areas in the Kheroni region and met families impacted by the clashes. According to a statement issued by the Assam Congress, the delegation alleged that a “divide and rule” approach was being used to create rifts between hill and plain areas and among communities for political gains.
Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia said the delegation would submit a memorandum to the Assam governor on Wednesday based on its findings from the site visit. He stated that the clashes were linked to disputes over alleged encroachment by Hindi-speaking settlers on Village Grazing Reserve (VGR) and Professional Grazing Reserve (PGR) land in tribal areas.
Violence broke out on December 22 in Kheroni after police removed three Karbi agitators, who had been on a hunger strike for 15 days demanding eviction drives. Authorities said the agitators were removed for medical treatment. During the unrest, one person died in police firing, another was burnt to death inside his house, and more than 180 people were injured, including 173 security personnel.
The opposition delegation criticised the government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP-led Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, alleging inaction despite rising tensions. They also demanded compensation for victims, an assessment of losses, and immediate relief measures for affected families.
Meanwhile, Army columns comprising around 60 to 80 personnel each have been deployed in the affected areas to conduct flag marches and assist in maintaining law and order.
