Tura, Dec 31: In view of the prevailing situation in neighbouring Bangladesh and the increased risk of cross-border movement of unwanted elements, the District Magistrate of West Garo Hills, Mary Lisa K. Marak, MCS, has imposed a night curfew along the Indo-Bangladesh border in the district.

The curfew, effective immediately, will be in force from 6:00 PM to 5:00 AM up to 200 metres from the Zero Line (International Border) under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

The order cites vulnerabilities in border areas to illegal infiltration, insurgent movement, smuggling networks, and other unlawful activities, particularly during night hours.

Under the curfew, the following are prohibited within the restricted zone:

Movement of individuals attempting to cross into Bangladesh or enter Indian territory illegally.

Unauthorised assembly of five or more persons, and carrying sticks, rods, stones, or potential weapons.

Illegal activities, including smuggling of cattle, contraband goods, betel nut, betel leaves, fish, dry fish, cigarettes, bidis, and other prohibited items.

The District Magistrate stated the measures are necessary to prevent uncontrolled cross-border infiltration and maintain peace in the district. The curfew has been issued ex-parte due to the urgency of the situation and will remain in force until further notice.

The directive has been circulated to all relevant government departments, law enforcement agencies, and security bodies for strict compliance.
