Agartala, January 2, 2026: The Tripura Pradesh Unorganized Workers’ Congress staged a protest on Friday against the central government, alleging that Mahatma Gandhi’s name and legacy are being deliberately erased from the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

The organization accused the Modi government of undermining Gandhi’s ideals while simultaneously attacking workers’ rights. “By removing Gandhi’s identity from the scheme, the government is not only diminishing his legacy but also adopting anti-worker policies,” protestors claimed.

Leaders of the Workers’ Congress emphasized that MGNREGA is a vital lifeline for rural poor and unorganized laborers, providing employment and livelihood security. They argued that Gandhi’s philosophy is deeply tied to the spirit of the scheme, and its removal represents a calculated attempt to weaken both workers’ welfare and historical values.

According to the group’s program, demonstrators planned to march to the Circuit House to register their protest. However, police stopped the rally near Buddha Mandir, preventing them from reaching their destination. In response, the protestors held a sit-in demonstration at the spot.

As part of their symbolic protest, copies of the MGNREGA bill were burned. Addressing the gathering, leaders declared that the movement was aimed at safeguarding workers’ rights and honoring Gandhi’s ideals. They vowed to continue their agitation in the coming days.

Police officials stated that the rally was halted at a designated point to maintain law and order.
