Guwahati, Jan 3: Assam Police have arrested 18 people, including four women, in connection with the murder of a couple in Karbi Anglong district, allegedly over suspicion of practising witchcraft.
Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Akhilesh Kumar Singh confirmed the arrests after visiting the crime scene. He said scientific investigation is underway and strict action will be taken against those involved.
The incident took place on December 30 at around 8:25 pm at 1 No. Beloguri Munda Gaon under Hawraghat police station. Police received information that villagers had killed Gardi Beruwa, 46, and his wife Mira Beruwa following allegations of witchcraft.
On reaching the spot, police found the couple’s house vandalised. A fire was still burning in the front yard, where the bodies were allegedly burnt. Blood-soaked soil, a wooden stick, and a plastic container containing cow dung liquid, suspected to have been used to destroy evidence, were seized from the site.
A suo motu case has been registered under the Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention and Protection) Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Investigations are ongoing.
