Agartala, January 7, 2026: Agartala witnessed yet another shocking assault on journalists late last night, when two indigenous reporters were allegedly targeted in a planned attack with the intent to kill. The incident has sparked widespread outrage across the city and the state’s media fraternity.
It is reported that four assailants launched a violent attack on journalists Samir Debbarma and Jimmy Debbarma. The attackers first pounced on Samir Debbarma, smashing his two mobile phones, snatching a gold chain from his neck and looting cash from his pocket. Their motorcycle was also vandalized during the assault.
Jimmy Debbarma faced even more brutal violence. Locals said he was beaten with helmets, iron rods, and heavy sticks, leaving him severely injured. Though he managed to flee into his home, the attackers allegedly broke through the tin gate and continued their assault inside the house.

Fearing for their lives, the victims immediately contacted West Agartala Police Station. Police rushed to the scene, detained one of the accused, while the remaining suspects managed to escape.
On Tuesday morning, senior members of the journalist community including Pranab Sarkar, President of Agartala Press Club and Tripura Journalists’ Union as well as Indian Journalists’ Union Secretary, and Ranjit Debbarma, Editor of Chini Khorang News Channel and Secretary of Khumulwng Press Club, accompanied the injured journalists to the police station and inspected the crime scene.
Expressing strong condemnation, Pranab Sarkar demanded the arrest of the remaining three accused within 24 hours and urged authorities to take strict measures to ensure the safety of journalists.
The incident has triggered deep concern and anger among journalists across Tripura. Calls are growing for exemplary punishment of the culprits to safeguard press freedom and protect journalists from recurring violence.
