Agartala, January 7, 2026: Tripura’s famed hill-and-river destination Chabimura, often hailed as the “Mini Amazon” of the state, is undergoing a major transformation into a world-class eco-tourism hub. Backed by a ₹60-crore investment from the Asian Development Bank, the project has already achieved nearly 35 per cent progress, Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury confirmed during his third site inspection on Tuesday.

Chowdhury said the redevelopment aims to enhance visitor facilities while preserving the natural landscape and archaeological heritage. “We are working to develop this tourist spot in the lap of nature,” he remarked, stressing that Chabimura’s unique appeal could be elevated to global standards once basic amenities are in place.

Nestled along the Gomati River, Chabimura is renowned for its ancient rock carvings of Hindu deities etched into steep cliffs, with the towering relief of Goddess Durga as its centerpiece. Visitors typically access the site by boat, navigating dense forest stretches, while trekking, birdwatching and panoramic river views add to its allure.

Officials outlined that the redevelopment will feature 26 eco-friendly log huts, a cafeteria, landscaped pathways, a children’s play area, and other amenities designed to enrich the tourist experience. The project is slated for completion by October, with a formal public opening expected in December.

The minister also highlighted Tripura’s broader tourism push, noting that the sector was declared an industry last year. “After our government came to power, we initiated several projects including Chabimura, Narikel Kunja and adventure tourism,” he said, adding that tourism is poised to become a key livelihood driver across the North East.

Chowdhury further announced plans to inspect Banduar in Gomati district, where construction is underway on a replica complex of the 51 Shakti Peethas, another ambitious addition to Tripura’s tourism portfolio.
