Agartala, January 08, 2025: In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the North Tripura District Police, in a joint operation with the GSTN force, seized a massive consignment of illegal cough syrup valued at ₹1.26 crore and apprehended two individuals allegedly involved in the smuggling attempt.
Superintendent of Police Avinash Rai confirmed that the operation was carried out based on specific intelligence inputs. Acting swiftly, the police intercepted a vehicle transporting 12,600 bottles of banned cough syrup concealed within 252 cartons of ORS packets. The seizure took place as part of the district’s intensified efforts to combat narcotics, aligning with Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha’s vision of a drug-free Tripura.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the consignment originated in West Bengal and was en route to Agartala. The arrested individuals have been identified as Panjab Sheikh (48), son of Rezaul Sheikh from D-Para, Ranitala, and Sheikh (20), son of Shakir Sheikh from Sholua, both residents of West Bengal. Authorities have registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and the accused are scheduled to be produced before the court on Friday.
SP Rai reiterated the department’s unwavering commitment to eradicating drug trafficking in the region, stating that such operations will continue with full force in the days ahead.
