Shillong, January 13, 2026: Meghalaya police on Monday arrested a fourth suspect in the murder of activist Dilseng M Sangma, who was beaten to death while investigating suspected illegal stone quarrying in West Garo Hills district.
Sangma, a leader of a Garo organization, was attacked on January 9 in Rajabala along with fellow activists. He succumbed to his injuries, and another companion sustained serious wounds. Authorities believe the attack was carried out by individuals linked to illegal quarry operations.
West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police AT Sangma said three suspects were already in custody, and the investigation is ongoing, with further arrests possible.
The killing has heightened tensions in the district, leading to increased security measures and peace committee meetings. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma condemned the attack, assured justice, and called for calm.
