Agartala, January 16, 2026: Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Friday sought to reassure citizens over fears of Nipah virus spread, following reports of suspected cases in neighboring West Bengal.

Addressing the media, Dr. Saha said that information received indicated three cases had been detected in West Bengal. He clarified that no such cases have been reported in Tripura so far but stressed that precautionary measures are already in place.

“Nipah virus originates from fruit bats, which are natural carriers. I have directed health officials to adopt all necessary precautions immediately,” the Chief Minister stated.

He added that the Health Department has begun implementing urgent steps, alerting hospitals and relevant authorities to ensure preparedness. Dr. Saha appealed to the public not to panic or fall prey to misinformation.

“There is no case here as of now. I request people not to be confused or create panic. All SOPs are being followed. Citizens only need to remain cautious,” he said.

NHM Mission Director Saju Vaheed A confirmed on Thursday that Tripura has not reported any active Nipah virus cases. He said vigilance has been intensified, with hospitals strengthening isolation facilities, infection control practices, and readiness protocols. Training sessions are also underway for healthcare personnel to detect and manage suspected cases at an early stage.

Health authorities have urged residents to avoid consuming raw date palm sap or toddy, eat only washed and properly peeled fruits, refrain from eating half-eaten fruits found on the ground, maintain strict hand hygiene with soap and water, avoid close contact with sick individuals, and follow government advisories on the safe handling of patients and deceased persons.

Dr. Saha reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health, assuring that monitoring will continue across the state. He called on citizens to remain alert and cooperate with authorities in maintaining preventive measures.
