Assam marked its first-ever participation at the 56th World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on Monday, presenting itself as India’s fastest-growing state and a promising destination for global investment in green energy, semiconductors, and tourism.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, leading the state’s delegation, urged international investors to look beyond traditional hubs and consider Assam as an “emerging state and emerging economy.” He cited Reserve Bank of India data placing Assam at the top of the growth chart and pointed to the International Monetary Fund’s revised projection of India’s growth above 7 per cent.
Highlighting the state’s investment track record, Sarma noted that last year’s Advantage 2 Summit generated commitments worth ₹5 lakh crore, with ₹3 lakh crore already grounded through land allocation and projects underway. He announced new proposals in the pipeline, including a solar plant, Palm Storage Project, and bamboo-to-methanol conversion. “We expect to sign MoUs close to ₹1 lakh crore during my stay in Davos, focused on green and new energy,” he said.
On the industrial front, Sarma revealed that Assam will hold discussions with semiconductor industry leaders, supported by Tata’s presence in the state. “With Tata setting up operations, the semiconductor ecosystem is gradually developing. While nothing concrete is on the table yet, these interactions will help move things forward,” he added.
Tourism also featured prominently in Assam’s pitch, with MoUs for five-star hotels in Guwahati and Kaziranga lined up for signing back in India. Sarma said several investment offers for hotels and homestays are already in progress.
Positioning Assam as the gateway to the Northeast, the Chief Minister emphasized that investments in the state benefit the entire region. “Industries may be located in Assam, but they draw talent from all northeastern states. Assam provides the ecosystem that supports growth across the Northeast. If one rupee comes to Assam, it automatically benefits the entire region,” he said.
