Agartala, January 20, 2026: The Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) has been honoured with the Silver Medal at the 105th SKOCH Awards, marking a significant achievement in India’s renewable energy drive. The award was presented by Sameer Kochhar, Chairman and Managing Director of the SKOCH Group, during a ceremony in the national capital.

The recognition comes for TREDA’s pioneering work in installing solar-powered microgrids across remote tribal regions of Tripura, where conventional electricity supply has long remained a challenge. For decades, these hilly and inaccessible areas faced erratic or non-existent power, severely impacting education, healthcare, and livelihoods.

Under the Central Government’s PM-DEVINE scheme, implemented in partnership with the State Government, TREDA has commissioned 274 solar microgrids ranging from 2 kW to 25 kW capacity. Together, they generate 3 MW of clean energy, lighting up 9,762 households in 247 tribal habitations. The ₹81.02 crore project has provided each household with four LED lights and a mobile charging socket, while solar streetlights now brighten village roads and public spaces.

Field inspections highlight the scale of the achievement. Many settlements lie 15–20 km from the nearest accessible point, making grid extension nearly impossible. Even areas with partial grid access suffered frequent outages, particularly during monsoon seasons, leaving villages in darkness for days.

The impact of the solar microgrids has been transformative. Families that once relied on kerosene lamps now enjoy safe, reliable lighting. Children can study after sunset, artisans extend their work hours, and small businesses remain open into the evening. Access to mobile charging and television has connected communities to information and government services, reducing isolation. Solar streetlights have also improved safety, enabling vibrant public life after dark.

The award underscores TREDA’s role in advancing sustainable energy solutions and improving quality of life in some of India’s most underserved regions.
