Guwahati, Jan 22: Violence-hit Kokrajhar district in Assam is gradually returning to normalcy, with no fresh incidents reported since Tuesday evening, officials said on Thursday. Security has been intensified, with the Army, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Assam Police conducting regular patrols in sensitive areas.

At least two people were killed in clashes between members of the Bodo and Adivasi communities, which were triggered by a road accident on Monday night. Four Army columns have been deployed in the affected areas to assist civil authorities in maintaining law and order.

According to officials, more than 1,000 people have taken shelter in relief camps set up at five schools in the district. The district administration is working to ensure the safe return of displaced residents to their homes as the situation stabilises.

Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) remain in force in Kokrajhar, while internet services continue to be suspended in Kokrajhar and neighbouring Chirang district as a precautionary measure.

The violence reportedly began on Monday night when a vehicle carrying three Bodo persons hit two Adivasis on Mansingh Road in Karigaon. The occupants of the vehicle were allegedly assaulted, and the vehicle was set on fire, resulting in one death on the spot and another later due to injuries.

Tensions escalated on Tuesday as members of both communities blocked a national highway, set tyres on fire, vandalised a government office, and attacked the Karigaon police outpost. Police resorted to baton charges and used tear gas to disperse protesters, leaving several demonstrators and security personnel injured.

Authorities said the situation is under control and are closely monitoring developments to prevent any further escalation.
