Agartala, January 24, 2026: Tension gripped the heart of Kailashahar town on Saturday evening during Saraswati Puja celebrations, after a sudden clash broke out between two groups in the Katal Dighirpar area. Within moments, the locality turned into a battlefield, prompting heavy police deployment.

BJP Kailashahar Mandal president Pritam Ghosh was injured in the violence, while the residence of Arup Dhar, district president of the BJP’s youth wing, was vandalized. In addition, an unofficial office of the ruling party located in Katal Dighirpar was set ablaze.

To bring the situation under control, police resorted to firing blank rounds and conducting a lathi-charge. Senior officials, including District Superintendent of Police Sudhambika R, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Rahul A, and Kailashahar Police Station OC Tapas Malakar, were present at the spot along with a large contingent of state police, SRP, and central forces.

Authorities confirmed that the entire area remains tense, with additional forces deployed and strict surveillance underway to prevent further escalation.

Speaking to reporters, BJP Mandal president Pritam Ghosh alleged that around 16 youths from the Muslim community armed with machetes and sticks created unrest near the puja venue. “As soon as we rushed to the spot after receiving information, they attacked us indiscriminately. The situation turned more violent. These miscreants are trying to replicate the dangerous environment of Bangladesh. We must fight unitedly against such forces,” Ghosh said.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate Rahul A stated that the situation is now under control. “Police acted promptly to contain the violence. Additional forces have been deployed, and strict monitoring is in place,” he assured.
