Aizawl, Jan 24: The Mizoram government has launched a pilot project to provide round-the-clock drinking water to around 300 households in two areas of the state capital, officials said on Friday.
Public Health Engineering Minister Lalnilawma inaugurated the Rs 5.24 crore initiative, funded under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2 scheme, during an event on Thursday night.
The project will benefit residents of Vaivakawn and Chawnpui in western Aizawl, with 24/7 water supply expected within four to six months after completion. Lalnilawma described it as a key milestone for the state and said there are plans to expand the facility to more households in the future.
The initiative includes smart water meters provided free to consumers, a new pipeline network, and advanced technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT) and SCADA systems for real-time monitoring. Ultrasonic level indicators, automated valves, and flow meters will help track water levels, flow, and pressure to ensure equitable supply.
Lalnilawma highlighted challenges like delays in environmental clearances and land availability for other water projects. He said proposals seeking funding to improve water supply in other towns have been sent to the Centre. Residents were also urged to conserve water and use the ‘Tui leak’ Android app to report pipeline leaks.
