Agartala, January 24, 2026: A day after violent clashes erupted between two factions of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kailashahar over Public Works Department (PWD) tenders, Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag on Saturday confirmed that the situation has returned to normal, with no fresh incidents reported.

The confrontation, reportedly between members of the BJP’s Mandal and Yuva Morcha units, turned violent on Friday, leaving at least one person injured. Police were forced to intervene, resorting to a lathi charge and firing warning shots in the air to disperse the warring groups.

“Police acted swiftly and brought the situation under control within 15 to 20 minutes,” DGP Anurag told reporters during his visit to the Assam Rifles ground, where he was attending a full-dress rehearsal ahead of Republic Day celebrations.

A suo motu case has been registered in connection with the incident, and an investigation is currently underway. “If anyone is found guilty, they will be arrested,” the DGP stated.

While Anurag refrained from elaborating on the cause of the violence, he acknowledged that the unrest stemmed from a dispute between two groups. “Violence erupted between two groups… Now the situation is peaceful. No one was injured in the open firing,” he said.

Sources indicate that the clash was triggered by a disagreement over three PWD tenders, highlighting deepening factionalism within the BJP’s local leadership in the Kailashahar subdivision.
