Five individuals from Assam have been named among the 113 recipients of the Padma Shri award for 2026, recognising their outstanding contributions in art, culture, agriculture, and public affairs.
Haricharan Saikia, honoured in the field of Art, is an acclaimed Sattriya dancer with a career spanning six decades. He founded the Sattriya Dance & Music School and has promoted the active participation of women in the classical dance form.
Jogesh Deuri received the award for his work in Agriculture. A noted sericulturist, he established Integrated Bodoland Silk Parks, benefiting over 1,600 villages and thousands of farmers. His initiatives have increased women’s participation to 70% in the Eri silk value chain.
Kabindra Purkayastha, awarded posthumously in Public Affairs, served as a three-time Member of Parliament and Minister from Silchar. He contributed over 45 years to public service and education, including his tenure as principal of Ramakrishna Vidyapeeth, Sribhumi.
Nuruddin Ahmed has been recognised in Art for his contributions as a director, art director, and set and costume designer. He played a pivotal role in reviving Assamese theatre and has brought national and state events to life, sustaining Assamese culture despite limited resources.
Pokhila Lekthepi, also honoured in Art, is a celebrated Karbi folk singer known as the ‘Queen of Melody’. Over five decades, she has composed more than 300 folk songs, popularising Karbi music across Assam and beyond.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated the awardees, describing them as “epitomes of selfless service and cultural pride,” and noted that their achievements continue to inspire future generations.
