Agartala, January 27, 2026: Tripura’s rich culinary heritage received national recognition as the Geographical Indication (GI) tagged sweet ‘Matabari Peda’ was served at the high-tea hosted by President of India Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on the occasion of Republic Day.
Alongside Matabari Peda, the traditional ‘Pati-Sapta Pitha’ of Tripura and Assam also featured in the curated menu, showcasing the diverse food traditions of the Northeast at one of the country’s most prestigious official gatherings.
Matabari Peda, a traditional milk-based confection associated with the revered Tripura Sundari Temple at Matabari, is known for its distinctive caramelised flavour and soft texture. Having received the GI tag, the sweet is not only a symbol of Tripura’s cultural identity but also represents the livelihoods of local artisans, particularly women involved in its production.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha took to social media to express his delight over the recognition. Sharing the development, he wrote that it was heartening to see Matabari Peda and Pati-Sapta Pitha from Tripura gracing the Republic Day high tea at Rashtrapati Bhavan, celebrating the state’s rich cultural heritage on a national platform.
The inclusion of these traditional sweets in the President’s Republic Day menu is being seen as a significant moment for Tripura, bringing national visibility to its GI-tagged products and reinforcing efforts to promote indigenous foods, local craftsmanship, and cultural pride.
Officials and cultural observers believe such recognition at the highest constitutional level will further encourage the preservation and promotion of Tripura’s traditional delicacies and support local communities associated with them.
