Continuing its efforts to promote awareness on women’s rights, the Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW), in association with the Dimdailong Women Society, organised a one-day awareness programme on “Legal Rights of Women” at the Dimdailong Community Hall, New Checkon, on Tuesday.

Addressing the programme, W. Phajatombi Devi, MCS, Member Secretary of MSCW and Additional Director (IPR), Manipur, said the initiative was aimed at educating women about their legal rights and entitlements.

She stressed that such awareness programmes are essential to empower women with knowledge and confidence, which in turn helps in building an equitable and just society.

Former Secretary of Dimdailong Women Society, G. Thiampuina, also known as Ruby, observed that women from minority communities often hesitate to report crimes and injustices due to fear, shame and social stigma. She highlighted the role of MSCW in addressing women’s grievances, including cases of domestic violence and other forms of injustice, and encouraged women to approach the Commission for support and guidance whenever needed.

Speaking on the occasion, Thumlip Tiningpham Monsang, Chairperson of MSCW, urged women to remain informed about their legal rights while acknowledging their resilience and spirit of sacrifice. She reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to advancing the welfare and empowerment of women across the state and called upon all sections of society to work collectively for a progressive, empowered and harmonious society.
During the technical session, Kh. Lucy Jacky, Deputy Chief, Legal Aid Defence Counsel, delivered a presentation on “Rights of Women,” while T. Chuongsin Koireng, former Member of MSCW, spoke on the theme “Know Your Rights.”

The programme was attended by SK Sophia Moyon, Member, MSCW; Romy, President, Dimdailong Women Society; Gaisinglung Kamei, Reverend Pastor of Dimdailong Baptist Church, along with a large number of women from the area and nearby localities.
