The two-day cultural extravaganza, Tyisam Festival, began on Wednesday at the Golden Beach in Baghmara, South Garo Hills, drawing enthusiastic participation from locals and tourists. Meghalaya Tourism Minister T.D. Shira inaugurated the event in the presence of local MLA Kartush R. Marak and several other dignitaries.
Minister T.D. Shira expressed his happiness at participating in the festival, noting that Baghmara’s Simsang Beach reminded him of Chennai’s Marina Beach, though he highlighted that the sand area in Baghmara is much larger. He encouraged the public to promote domestic tourism and create an environment that attracts visitors, emphasizing that tourism could significantly boost the local economy. The Minister also said the State Tourism Department is focused on developing tourism across Meghalaya and urged the people of South Garo Hills to fully utilize available resources to make the area a tourist-friendly destination.
The inaugural event featured a flower and vegetable show, singing and dancing competitions, indigenous games, beach sports, and musical nights with performances by popular Garo Hills bands North Wind, Rough Road, and other local bands.
Tyisam Festival will also highlight the rich cultural heritage of the region, with special focus on local cuisine, music, handicrafts, and other traditional produce, showcasing the vibrant culture of Meghalaya.
