Aizawl, Jan 29: C Lalsawmzuala, the newly appointed Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Mizoram’s Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC), secured a vote of confidence on Thursday, ending months of administrative uncertainty following last December’s fragmented elections.
The MNF leader, sworn in as council chief on Tuesday, won the majority with 15 votes in favor from the United Legislature Party (ULP) a post-poll coalition of MNF and Congress against 9 votes opposed.
Speaking after the victory, Lalsawmzuala urged members across party lines to work together for stable governance. “Our primary goal is a stable and effective government. I urge all members, including those who voted against, to join hands for the welfare and progress of the Lai people,” he said.
The 25-member LADC, formed in 1972 under the Sixth Schedule for the Lai tribal people, saw no party secure the 13-seat majority in the December 3 polls. The MNF won 8 seats, Congress 7, Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) 6, BJP 2, and two independents, including former CEM V. Zirsanga.
Post-election developments included the collapse of a pre-poll MNF-Congress alliance, a failed ZPM-Congress partnership, a short-lived MNF-ZPM Lairam Legislature Party (LLP), and finally, the MNF-Congress ULP staking claim on January 9.
