Agartala, January 30, 2026: On the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation and a global symbol of truth and non-violence, the Pradesh Congress Committee on Friday organized a series of programmes, including a mass sit-in protest against the alleged cancellation of the MGNREGA scheme.

Congress leaders and workers first offered floral tributes to a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi at the Pradesh Congress Bhavan, paying homage to his ideals and sacrifices. Later, they proceeded to the martyrs’ memorial at Gandhi Ghat, where further tributes were paid in his memory.

Marking the occasion, a mass sit-in protest was held for nearly four hours in front of the Pradesh Congress Bhavan as part of the party’s “Save MGNREGA” campaign. The protest highlighted concerns over the future of the employment guarantee scheme and its impact on rural livelihoods.

Addressing the gathering, Pradesh Congress President Asish Kumar Saha said Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals continue to guide the nation on the path of justice, peace and democratic rights. He, however, alleged that the present BJP government was undermining and insulting Gandhiji’s principles.

Saha claimed that the MGNREGA scheme, which provided employment and support to poor and underprivileged sections, particularly rural labourers, has been cancelled and replaced with the VB-G Ram Ji scheme. He asserted that the move would severely affect the rural poor and demanded immediate withdrawal of the decision to cancel MGNREGA.
