Aizawl, Jan 30: In a landmark development for the National Cadet Corps (NCC) in Mizoram, Mizoram Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), today graced the ceremonial raising of the NCC Group Headquarters, Aizawl as the Chief Guest. The event, held at the Mizoram University (MZU) Auditorium, formally inaugurated an independent Group Headquarters dedicated to NCC operations in the state. During the programme, the Governor handed over the NCC Group Headquarters Aizawl flag to Group Commander Brig Gunjit Singh Arora, thereby officially raising the headquarters. He also released a special commemorative “My Stamp” to mark the occasion.
The ceremony was attended by Sports & Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar as guest of honour, together with Lt Col Clement Lalhmingthanga (Retd), MLA; Prof. Dibakar Chandra Deka, Vice-Chancellor, Mizoram University; Maj Gen Anurag Vij, Additional Director General, NCC, North Eastern Region and other distinguished guests and senior officials.
Speaking on the occasion, the Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh expressed his pleasure at Mizoram now having its own dedicated NCC Group Headquarters, describing it as a proud and significant milestone for the state. He noted that since its establishment in Mizoram in 1964, the NCC has recorded impressive progress and achievements. He emphasised that no other youth organisation equals the NCC in instilling discipline and offering a wide range of opportunities to young people. Recalling his own days as an NCC cadet during his student years, the Governor remarked that for those aspiring to join the Armed Forces, there is no better preparation than participation in the NCC. He added that the organisation plays an exceptionally effective role in moulding individuals into responsible, well-rounded citizens.
The Governor expressed confidence that the formal raising of the NCC Group Headquarters in Aizawl would lead to a substantial expansion of NCC activities among Mizoram’s youth. He urged all NCC cadets to faithfully adhere to their motto of “Unity & Discipline”. He commended the consistent praise earned by the Mizoram NCC Band at Republic Day parades and encouraged continued striving for excellence. Highlighting the diverse activities conducted under the NCC such as community service, disaster response, blood donation camps, environmental protection initiatives, and social awareness programmes the Governor observed that these efforts foster patriotism and help shape young people into valuable contributors to society. He praised the Mizoram Government’s initiatives to promote adventure tourism and expressed the hope that greater numbers of NCC cadets would participate in such adventure activities in the future. He reaffirmed the state government’s full commitment and continued support for the sustained development of the NCC in Mizoram.
As part of the programme, a documentary video tracing the history and achievements of the NCC in Mizoram was screened. Maj Gen Anurag Vij presented the official Group Headquarters banner to the Governor. Five distinguished NCC alumni and cadets were honoured with mementos in recognition of their outstanding contributions. Brig Gunjit Singh Arora, the first Group Commander of NCC Group Headquarters Aizawl, proposed the vote of thanks and formally concluded the proceedings. Afterwards, the Governor spent time interacting with the NCC cadets present.
Until now, NCC battalions in Mizoram had functioned under the Silchar Group Headquarters. With today’s development, Mizoram gains its own independent Group Headquarters commanded by a Brigadier. The NCC was first established in Mizoram in 1964. At present, the state has four battalions: three based in Aizawl (20 Mizoram Bn NCC, 1 Mizoram Bn NCC and 1 Mizoram Air Sqn NCC) and one in Lunglei (2 Mizoram Bn NCC).
The Mizoram Government issued the sanction letter for the establishment of NCC Group Headquarters Aizawl on June 18, 2024. Key appointments including the Group Commander, Deputy Group Commander, and Training Officer were made between July and October 2025. On January 29, 2026, the Chief Minister unveiled the flag of the NCC Group Headquarters Aizawl in a preparatory ceremony. Today’s event constituted the official and ceremonial raising of the headquarters.
