Guwahati, Feb 5: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, whenever conducted by the Election Commission after the upcoming Assembly elections, will be “very extensive and properly done.” He made the remarks while speaking to reporters during an official function in Sonari on February 5.
Sarma stated that a Special Revision (SR) of electoral rolls is currently underway in the state. He said he had earlier requested the Election Commission to conduct SIR immediately, but the Commission opted for SR citing the non-publication of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC). He added that the state government welcomes the SIR process.
According to official data, the final NRC released on August 31, 2019 included 3,11,21,004 names out of 3,30,27,661 applicants, while 19,06,657 people were excluded. The list is yet to be formally notified by the Registrar General of India.
Election Commission figures show that the draft electoral roll prepared after the ongoing SR contains 2,52,01,624 electors, marking a 1.35 percent increase compared to the previous final roll published in January 2025. Between January 6 and December 27 last year, there were 7,86,841 additions and 4,47,196 deletions.
The SR exercise also identified 4,78,992 deceased electors, 5,23,680 shifted electors, and 53,619 multiple entries. The Election Commission clarified that these names remain in the rolls until formal claims and objections are processed. The final electoral roll is scheduled for publication on February 10.
