Shillong, Feb 6: The death toll from a devastating explosion at an illegal coal mine in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district rose to 19 on Friday after rescue teams recovered another body.
The incident occurred on Thursday in the Mynsyngat, Thangskai area, reportedly caused by a dynamite blast. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Special Response Team (SRT) continue operations at the site.
East Jaintia Hills Additional Deputy Commissioner CP Mawkan said eight people were injured in the blast and have been shifted to safety. “We have recovered 18 bodies earlier and are still searching for those trapped inside the pit,” he told ANI.
Meghalaya Minister Lakhmen Rymbul confirmed that two individuals have been arrested in connection with the illegal mining operation.
NDRF DIG Operations Mohsin Shahedi highlighted the challenges faced by the rescue teams, who were mobilized from 50 km away and had to navigate difficult terrain accessible only by 4×4 vehicles.
Rescue operations are ongoing despite the hazardous conditions at the site.
